Goal setting is one of the most important, yet least utilized, of the business skills. Many people set out on their journey to entrepreneurial success without any kind of a roadmap or plan. This is a huge mistake because you cannot set sail for your course without any map of where you’re going. If you are cooking a brand-new recipe, you are going to need a list of ingredients and steps in order to make sure that you have the right final product. The same can be said for setting out on a journey to a new business. If you don’t have any steps listed out in a logical order, you’re likely to end up with a big mess at the end.

Like it or not, goal setting is a huge part of making sure that you are constantly focused on what you want out of life. You need to set concrete goals that are achievable so that you can feel progress along the way. It’s not enough to simply say “I want to make $100,000 per year”. That is just too large of a goal for many people. Some individuals will have a hard time even visualizing that much money if they’ve never made that kind of income before. Because it seems so huge, you can get very frustrated and discouraged until you finally give up.

Instead of setting such a huge goal, make sure to set smaller goals that you can achieve. As you mark each one off the list, you will get a sense of accomplishment that will propel you forward in your journey. You might even want to write these up on a vision board or dry erase board said that they are always at the front of your mind. Don’t simply write a list of goals and then stick them in a drawer where you never look at them again.

Setting goals also allows you to have a long-term vision instead of just short term. So many people are focused on the short-term, such as just paying their bills, but they never see the importance of long-term goals. Haven’t we all looked back on our past and thought “wow, if I had just done…” Don’t live a life full of regrets. Instead, have goals that you can work toward every single day.

When you set about creating your goals, first create an overall big picture of what you have planned for the next five or 10 years. Then, break all of those down into smaller and smaller target goals that you have to reach in order to get to the larger goals. When setting your goals, it’s important to create them in many different areas including career, family, education, financial, physical and even things like hobbies or volunteerism.

Once you have started setting up some of the action steps that you need to take to reach her larger goals, start creating daily to do list that will help you work towards smaller goals. Basically, you are biting off small chunks that will eventually get you to your end goal. Some people make the mistake of trying to start with nothing and get to $100,000 a year in a week. This is definitely not the norm, so it’s important to set realistic goals that you can achieve along the way
